Get fit and have fun in Wigan town centre

Get fit and have fun with two-action packed days in Wigan town centre designed to help you to be at your happiest and healthiest in 2017.

Nationwide the Heart Research UK-led JanUary wellbeing festival takes place between 9th and 15th January providing us with a wide range of resources to live healthier lifestyles.

Here in Wigan’s Grand Arcade Shopping Centre on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th January, Wigan Council will be showcasing all the local services we provide to help people lead healthier lifestyles as well as take part in a wide range of fun and challenging activities.

The event will feature services such as Lose weight feel great, which is a FREE weight loss service provided by Wigan Council to help you lose weight and keep it off for good. If you are:

Over 18 years old
Have a BMI of 25 or over
Live, work or registered with a GP in Wigan Borough

Then there are a range of services available to you including:

Community Weight Management Service is a unique partnership between Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and Slimming World to help you lose weight and keep it off.
Trim Down Shape Up is a unique fitness and weight loss service for men in the Wigan Borough.
The Healthy Routes service is based in your local community to improve your health and wellbeing providing support on a one to one basis
The Specialist Weight Management service provides a tailored programme to meet your needs, which will help you to lose weight and keep it off for good.

Inspiring healthy lifestyles will be providing opportunities to get involved, with an outside climbing wall, a rowing competition, dance mats and a smoothie bike! They will also be offering inactive people the chance to join a brand new programme using innovative wearable technology which enables people to become more active with online motivational support. You will also be able to make  a pledge to ‘do something good for you’ on a ‘pledge wall’

Healthfirst will be providing free NHS healthchecks for people aged 40-74yrs on both days. Drop-in sessions will also be available, providing people with 15-minute consultations and advice, as well as healthy food demonstrations, offering a wide range of ways to make even the smallest of changes to improve health.

Professor Kate Ardern, Director of Public Health for Wigan Council welcomed the event and the importance of the JanUary campaign, saying:

“This event is the perfect way to start 2017 in Wigan Borough, with Inspiring healthy lifestyles providing a range of examples of how people can become healthier and happier to create long-term and sustainable positive change.

“Our commitment to continuing to reduce obesity levels works hand-in-hand with JanUary through programmes such as Lose Weight Feel Great. By improving our health and that of our families and friends we can also help to reduce the demands on our health services.”

The event will take place on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th January between 9.00am-5.00pm at the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre in Wigan.

The wearable technology initiative is part of a significant investment in the borough’s Activity Referral Scheme by the Joint Commissioning Board. This will enable a further 2,000 inactive people to access the programme provided by Inspiring healthy lifestyles across the Wigan Borough.
